Delhi Arena – Kishoreganj

About 450 years old Delhi Akhra (Delhi Akhra) is one of the historical and sightseeing places of Kishoreganj district. If you think that the place is a part of Delhi, India, then you would be wrong because it is actually located at the end of Mithamain Upazila which is inhabited by Haor of Kishoreganj.

This arena is one of the best attractions of Haor area. Rows of hijal trees along the banks of the river, ancient walls and buildings, and the beautiful surroundings inside will attract any visitor. Inside the Akhara are the tombs of the spiritual saint Narayana Goswami and his disciple Gangaram Goswami.

There are also Dharamshalas, Nathmandirs, Guest Houses, Pakshalas and Vaishnavadeva residences. There are two ponds on either side of the arena. And around the Akhara, there are about 3000 Hijal trees of the Akhara period standing in a large area. This ancient akhara and hijal trees are a beautiful landscape of Haor - which beckons everyone.

It is known about the establishment period of Delhi Akhara, Sadhak Narayan Goswami established this Akhara during the reign of Emperor Jahangir of Delhi.

History of Akhara in Delhi

There is a legend in the area centered around Delhi's Akhra and Hijal trees. The story of cow shaming is about 450 years ago, the spiritual saint Narayan Goswami, the founder of the Akhara in Delhi, was a disciple of the spiritual saint Ramakrishna Goswami of the nearby Vitlanga Akhara. At that time the area was full of scrub forest, there were no hijal trees.

The area was surrounded by rivers. As a result, the arena area felt like an island. No navigation could be done on this river. For mysterious reasons, the boats plying on this river would sink or fall into some other accident, one day a treasure boat sent by the emperor of Delhi sank along this river with cargo.

The riders tried hard to lift the treasure but failed and one of them died of snakebite. Ramakrishna, the saint of Bitalanga, received this news and ordered his disciple Narayan Goswami to come here. According to Gurudev's instructions, Saint Narayan Goswami came here and sat on the river bank for penance.

He came up to the shore in the spirit of God. In this way, the same thing happened for about 7 days. One day someone said like divine words, you can't stay here, leave here. The saint replied, who are you? The answer came, we are residents here. I am here because of my ancestors. We are having problems because of you. The saint said, "Be clear, that is, take form." Immediately, they each assumed the shape of a giant monster.

Narayana Goswami saw thousands of gigantic demon statues around him. Which will usually make you shiver. Now with them.

Sadhak Narayan Goswami had many talks. It is decided that he will stay, they will also stay. But they cannot do anything to anyone and will follow the instructions of Narayana Goswami. Sadhak Narayan Goswami ordered them, all of you around me take the form of Hijal tree. Then the chief of the demons requested the saint to do penance by sitting under the tree under which he would take the image of the Hijal tree. As soon as the saint accepted the request, each of the demons assumed the form of a hijl tree.

Since then, Narayana Goswami used to sit down on the head of the main demon and chant sadhana. As a result, it was given the name 'Sadhanbri', which is still there near the arena. It is currently surrounded by a fence. Bhoga is offered here every Amavasya-Purnima night.

Thousands of hijal trees of strange shapes are scattered here on the 372 acres of Akhara land. Which beckons the stranger from afar. Meanwhile, Sadhak Narayan Goswami raised the sunken treasure along with its contents and saved the snake-bitten dead person. Later after this news reached the Emperor Jahangir of Delhi, he came here and established an arena in the name of Sadhak Narayan Goswami with a large area of Lakheraj. Since then the Akhara is known as 'Delhi Akhara'.

In 1212, Emperor Jahangir recorded the land in a copper vessel called Akhara. But in 1370 robbers took away this vessel said the Akhara attendants. 8 Chaitra fairs are held every year in Akhara of Delhi. Around this fair, everyone in the region rejoiced in the festival.

How to go:

Howar can be reached by several routes in Kishoreganj. But it is easier to go directly to Kishoreganj town by bus from Sayedabad or Golapbag or by train from Kamalapur.

Ten minutes by rickshaw from the station. After that Ekrampur. From there by auto rickshaw to Morichkhali Bazar. By the way, this market is the door of Haor in this way. Morichkhali Bazar means to step on the square of Haor. Cross the border and go straight to the boat.

After this, Dhukpuk Dhukpuk will start. Means the sound of the engine. It should stay on this word for 24 hours. At first it seems annoying, but later the ear will adapt to it. You can decide where to go before boarding the boat. Straight to Delhi Arena.

After visiting Delhi's akhara, you can spend the rest of your time without any plans. Everything will depend on the situation and the weather. But the time will be spent in the water of Haor. If it is not raining, you can spend the night on the roof of the trawler.

Apart from that, there is sleeping arrangement inside the trawler.  If you want, you can spend the night in the post office bungalow of the upazila headquarters. After that, you can turn the nose of the boat towards Haor Upazila Itna or Ashtagram while you are fishing with the floating tent.
