St Martin's Island – Cox's Bazar

Saint Martin's Island (Saint Martin's Island) is a coral island located in the northeastern part of the Bay of Bengal in the southernmost part of Bangladesh. This island with an area of about eight square kilometers is located in the estuary of Naf River, about 9 kilometers south of Teknaf in Cox's Bazar district and 8 kilometers west of the coast of Myanmar. Three sides of the island are bedrock, which sinks at high tide and rises at low tide. The average height of Sonadia (Saint Martin's Dbip) from sea level is 3.6 meters.

Wherever the eye can see only blue and blue, the blue of the sky and the sea are united together. If you want to enjoy this eye-catching beauty, visit the unique and beautiful coral island of Bangladesh, Saint Martin, which is also known as Coconut Jinjira. Locals call St. Martin's Island Narikel Jinjira (meaning Coconut Island) because of the dense coconut plantations that once existed on the island.

It is said that in the early 7th century, an Arabian merchant ship laden with cinnamon hit a huge underwater rock and sank here in inclement weather. As a result, the cinnamon on the ship spread all over the island, and in this context, St. Martin's Island became known as the 'Cinnamon Island'. However, during the cadastral survey in the first part of the last century, the surveying authority probably named this coral island Saint Martin's Island after a British saint.

The beauty of St. Martin, the only coral island in Bangladesh cannot be overstated. Around which is only the blue sea, boats tied to the shore, rows of coconut trees and the rhythm of the waves, sometimes stopping, sometimes the touch of the strong wind, these are the greatness of Saint Martin Island which makes this small island unique. The combination of sand, stone, coral or biodiversity, this coral island is a unique vacation center for the thirst for knowledge and travel. Many people from different countries of the world flock here throughout the year. The life style of the people on the island, the incomparable Mithali with the blue water of the sea creates a different feel.

Once you reach St. Martin, all your tiredness will be gone. Its clear and blue water makes it hard to stay still. You can swim in the water as you like. However, it is better not to go into the water during low tide. On the southern side of the island there is an abundance of keora bushes. There are some mangrove forests. Other plants include algae, seaweed, pine trees, etc. If you go to St. Martin, you will see the famous writer Humayun Ahmed's much-discussed 'sea luxury'. The people of St. Martin are very simple, their warm hospitality is the main attraction for tourists.

Many tourists also spend the night here to enjoy the beauty of the night darkness (there are no electric lights) amidst the striking natural beauty and true marine atmosphere. The unique experience of reclining on a beach chair and gazing at the magical moon or the night sky studded with millions of stars and enjoying the roar of the sea waves while pondering the mysteries of creation is indescribable but you can never get this experience without being here.

During the tourist season, 5 launches come and go from mainland Bangladesh here every day. Every day more than three thousand tourists come to St. Martin's Island in the morning to enjoy the beauty of the beach with clear blue water surrounded by corals and they leave the island by 3 pm.

The real fun of St. Martin can't be experienced without a night out. Daily tourists go back by afternoon, so the fun of exploring the island after afternoon is different. And if you can go on a full moon then there is no question, you can explore St. Martin's Island at night and increase your will to live.

Bicycle rental:

Bicycles can be rented for 60-80 taka per hour from some parts of the island, especially the west beach. However, these bicycles do not have brakes or bells. You can walk along the beach but not with the van on the island's narrow streets.

Electricity facilities:

There is no PDB or rural-electricity connection in St. Martin. It all depends on the generator. Resort-hotels run generators from evening usually 10-11pm. During the day, the water pump may run for some time to drain. Lack of current is not even felt during the day as there is no fan in winter. The problem is with charging mobiles, cameras and laptops. At night, there is no electricity in the island in the light of the rows of restaurants on the jetty. They keep the generator running till late at night.
