Chhera Island is the southernmost point on the map of Bangladesh. There is no more land in Bangladesh beyond its southern boundary. Separated from Saint Martin by a distance of 100 to 500 square meters, there are several islands, locally known as 'Chheradiya' or 'Siradiya.' The term 'Chhera' means separate or distinct, and it derives its name from being somewhat distinct from the main island or landmass, hence known as Chhera Island.
The island is located 5 kilometers south of Saint Martin Island. The area of Chera Island is three kilometers. The island was discovered towards the end of the year 2000.
During high tide, Chhera Island becomes separated from Saint Martin, and it appears as a lush forest in the middle of the sea when viewed from a distance. However, up close, you'll find rugged rocky terrain and sandy shores on Chhera Island.
The changing tides of the Bay of Bengal have further enhanced the beauty of Chhera Island. To reach Chhera Island from Cox's Bazar, you need to take a small boat from the nearby bridge, which takes you there. Chhera Island, along with Saint Martin, is home to only one family, the family of Hosen Ali. Hosen Ali's family consists of four children, including his eldest son Saddam, daughter Mausumi, and two other children, along with his wife Rahima Khatun. Since 1997, Hosen Ali's family has been residing on Chhera Island. Their lives revolve around the tourists. They also operate a shop on the island that offers various items, juices, and water for tourists. Additionally, they can arrange lunch and dinner on the island for those interested.
Around Chhera Island, including Saint Martin, you will find a vast expanse of keora trees. The keora tree's roots deeply intertwine with the island's soil, helping to protect it. Therefore, the keora tree plays a vital role in preserving the way of life on Chhera Island.
To reach Chhera Island, you can travel by ship or boat from Cox's Bazar. From Saint Martin, you can take a boat to reach Chhera Island.
